More information about the Prefecture of Preveza: www.preveza.info. History In the area which is nowadays occupied by Preveza's prefecture, there were lying the ancient Kassopia, the plain of Acherontas and the area of Elaiatis, nowadays named Parga. The first traces of life found in the area are dated since the Middle Paleolithic period. There were also found things, dated in the Neolithic period, in the area of Lakka Souli. In the Copper Age, around BC 2000, Thesprotians came in the area, while later people from south Greece settled in the fertile area. In the ancient times, this place was well-known because of its temple of necromancy. In the Mycenean Times, the Peloponnesians founded the city of Ephyra, where the famous ancient temple was built, in front of the banks of Acherodas lake. Around BC 700, the Ileians founded Pandosia (near present Kastri). At the end of the 7th BC century, the Corinthians founded colonies on the coastal areas and in the 5th BC century, the inhabitants of Epirus and mainly the Molossians attempted to control the coasts. In the Hellenistic Times, king Philip conquered the colonies of the Ileians and entrusted their rule to the Kassopians, who were mumbers of the "Public of Epirus". At that time, Kassope was a significant city of Epirus, the ruins of which are stretching on the south slope of Zalogos. Around BC 290, Pyrros built, at Preveza`s peninsula, a new city, which he named Verenike to honour his mother-in-low, wife of king Ptolemy A'. After the conquest of Epirus by the Romans, Emilios Paul ruined the seventy cities of Epirus and the necromancy of Ephyra and the area was deserted. After the battle of Actio against Anthony and Cleopatra, in BC 31, Octavian Augustus founded Nikopolis to honour this win. This city became later the center of Christianism with Byzantine temples full of mosaics. (Christianism spread in Epirus from this city, when Apostle Paul visit it). Afterwards, the history of the prefecture is the same with this of rest Epirus. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
